JB welfare centre struggles with rising operational cost

Serena can now express herself through art.

WHEN Serena Chua Si Ning first arrived at the Johor Baru Welfare Centre for Children with Disabilities (PKIIJB) 11 years ago, just trying to stand up left her gasping for air.

With the help of daily therapy and guidance, today the 14-year-old can now walk on her own and has even learned to express herself through paintings.

PKIIJB manager Lian Tuck Hock said the teenager suffered from a heart defect and learning disabilities.

“We were deeply moved the first time she picked up a paintbrush on her own.

“Her transformation reflects the progress made possible at PKIIJB,” he told StarMetro.

He said the centre has cared for more than 200 people with special needs since it was set up in 2008.

It currently supports 43 residents aged between eight and 54 who require long-term care, including those with intellectual disabilities, autism, developmental delays, brain injury and mobility impairments.

“For these individuals, the centre is not merely a place to live; it is their most stable, secure and understanding second home,” said Lian.

However, he said, rising costs of providing round-the-clock care has placed increasing financial pressure on the centre.

“With rising costs and increased consumption of rehabilitation supplies, the centre’s basic monthly operational expenses have increased to RM60,000 from RM50,000 previously.

“These expenses cover daily meals, diapers, cleaning supplies, medical and rehabilitation training materials, therapist and caregiver staffing as well as utility and maintenance costs,” he said.

Lian anticipated that the centre’s operational needs over the next six months would exceed RM300,000, posing an ongoing challenge for the organisation.

To contribute, the public can call the centre at 016-762 0123 (WhatsApp) or visit its social media page.
