Association pays tribute to benefactor of SMK Sacred Heart and its students

SACRED Heart School Old Students Association (Shosa) has commended an alumnus of SMK Sacred Heart, Sibu for his philanthropy.

Its vice-president Anthony Chan said Senator Robert Lau Hui Yew has consistently stepped forward when it involved student welfare and the school’s well-being.

He said Lau contributed towards numerous projects aimed at helping underprivileged students.

In the latest incident, he stepped in to help a 16-year-old student whose left leg had to be amputated due to bone cancer.

Chan said the funds given by Lau would be used to pay the student’s school fees apart from miscellaneous expenses related to his studies.

The Bawang Assan SUPP chief also paid for the student’s food expenses at the school canteen for a year.

Shosa president Yong King Sung said Lau, who is also the association’s past president, took the school’s ethos to heart.

“We were taught by the La Salle Brothers to always be there for the last, the lost and the least.

“And Lau being a former student of Sacred Heart has never faltered,” Yong said during a luncheon hosted by Shosa for the student and his father to meet Lau.

He added that the school was blessed to have many students like Lau and hoped current students would emulate the good example shown by them.

“We must all continue to ‘pay it forward’ so that future generations of students will benefit from this time-honoured tradition,” said Yong.

SMK Sacred Heart will celebrate its 120th anniversary this year, with a gala dinner tentatively scheduled for November.
