Expanding outreach among Sibu’s vulnerable groups

Sibu DAP Service Centre is ramping up its community welfare efforts by launching new outreach programmes to support vulnerable groups.

Sibu MP Oscar Ling’s special assistant Irene Wong said the initiative was part of the service centre’s 2026 target to introduce meaningful activities for the benefit of children and the elderly.

As part of this effort, a visit to the Sibu Methodist Children’s Home to celebrate Chap Goh Meh with the children, staff and teachers was arranged.

During the visit, Wong and several party members joined the children for dinner.

They presented gifts and angpow to the children and the home’s staff.

Wong said such visits were important in bringing the community together and ensuring that children in welfare homes experience joy during festive celebrations.

She encouraged the children to cherish their school days, work hard in their studies and enjoy the learning process.

She also called on students to participate in co-curricular activities to gain life experience.

“Cherish your teachers’ guidance, especially values of faith that help build character, resilience and compassion,” she advised.

According to Wong, the service centre is hoping to organise more welfare-oriented programmes throughout the year.

She said the service centre collaborated with Sibu Autistic Association and several non-governmental organisations last year to organise a fundraising charity run for the construction of its new building.

She also urged the community to offer time or financial support to people in need.

Wong added that community and religious groups could host visits and programmes to uplift the underprivileged and foster a compassionate society.
