Sibu’s new Sg Merah market opens, kick-starts area’s rejuvenation

A view of the market’s facade. There are more plans to rejuvenate Sungai Merah in Sibu.

SPACIOUS, neat and airy. That best describes the new Sungai Merah market which has opened for business in Sibu, Sarawak.

The old market was demolished and a new one reconstructed at a cost of RM8mil at the same site, which is at the heart of Sungai Merah bazaar.

Sarawak Deputy Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Minister Datuk Michael Tiang urged residents, especially those staying in Sungai Merah area, to support the new market.

“I encourage residents to visit the market, support the traders and contribute to creating a vibrant society.

“This market marks the start of my vision to rejuvenate Sungai Merah.

“I will soon unveil more plans and projects for the area,” he said.

Speaking to reporters at the opening of the market, Tiang said the old market, which was built seven decades ago, had to be demolished due to many issues, including a leaking roof.

The new market retains nearly all the original stall layouts, including the tamu (traditional market) section and food court, while introducing new stalls with an array of Muslim cuisine.

“It has nine food stalls, 18 dry market stalls and five wet market stalls, he said.

“With the improved environ-ment, traders now have better space to operate and some may even extend their business hours into the evening.”

Tiang extended his appreciation to Sibu Municipal Council for managing the project successfully and to the traders, who relocated to a temporary riverside site during construction.

“I am thankful to the original hawkers who adapted to the temporary relocation and waited for this market to be completed,” he added.
