THE new Sungai Merah market in Sibu, Sarawak, is expected reopen its doors next month.
The two-storey market costing RM8.5mil was built on the same site of the previous seven-decade-old premises that was demolished at end of 2022.
“Hawkers who have been temporarily trading along the banks of Sungai Merah will start relocating to the new premises,” said Pelawan assemblyman Datuk Michael Tiang during a site visit.
Also present were Sibu Division Resident Abang Mohamad Porkan Abang Budiman and Sibu Municipal Council secretary Yong Ing Chu.
Tiang said the new market would be a more comfortable and modern environment for hawkers and customers.
“The upgraded market is accessible, more comfortable and modernised to attract more visitors, including people with disabilities,” he said.
“I am optimistic this will stimulate the local economy by creating a better shopping environment for the public.”
The new market has a wet and dry area, carpark, food court, gallery and charging stations for electronic gadgets.
Despite the new design, the historical elements of the original market had been preserved, thus maintaining its cultural significance, said Tiang, who is also Sarawak Deputy Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister.
“This market dates back to the arrival in Sibu of the early Chinese settlers.
“It served as a vital business hub and is widely recognised and remains one of Sibu’s iconic destinations.”
With the reconstruction completed, Tiang was confident the market would once again become a popular destination.
