‘Third port terminal awaiting federal decision, possible to start work in Sept’

SELANGOR government confirms that all land matters for the development of Port Klang’s third terminal in Pulau Carey have been fully resolved as of December last year.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said land preparation involving about 1,000ha of seabed area and an additional 85.2ha of state land had been finalised earlier.

The area has been identified as a strategic location for development of a new national port, said Amirudin, revealing that construction works could begin as early as September.

“Our commitment regarding the land has been fulfilled and we are ready,” he said during a press conference outside the state assembly sitting at Bangunan Dewan Negeri Selangor in Shah Alam.

Amirudin, however, said the project remained delayed while awaiting a decision from the Federal Government, particularly regarding the approval structure and port jurisdiction, which fell under the Transport Ministry’s authority.

He said there were legal opinions, including those from the Attorney-General.

“The issue raised is that this port cannot be privately owned and must be owned by the Federal Government.

“We are awaiting the Federal Government’s decision on whether it will take over the project or grant approval for a specific implementation arrangement,” he elaborated.

The state, he added, had no objection if the Federal Government chose to assume the land-related costs, estimated at about RM100mil, or adopt a leaseback arrangement to enable the project to proceed.

Amirudin also said that the state, through Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) and its project partners, was ready to begin work on the development after obtaining approval.
