Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) in Sarawak hopes to get funding from Federal Government to instal more LED streetlights in and around town.

In his address at the local council’s fullboard meeting, chairman Clarence Ting said the RM1.3mil it had secured from Sarawak government was not sufficient for the installation of LED lights beyond commercial areas and main roads.

He said SMC qualified for federal funding to undertake such projects.

Commercial areas where SMC will be installing LED streetlighting include Sungai Merah, Farley, Delta and Rejang Park while the main roads include Jalan Bandong, Brooke Drive, Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg and Jalan Merdeka.

Ting said SMC had no authority to instal the lights at roads under Public Works Department (JKR) such as Jalan Deshon, Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adduce, Jalan Brother Albinus and Jalan Oya.

Separately, Ting said minutes of the local council’s meetings would go paperless next year.

“We will no longer be printing the minutes in book form for fullboard meetings,” he said.
