Sri Aman District Council will host this year’s state-level Earth Hour celebrations tomorrow, with Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) among the local authorities across Sarawak taking part.

SMC is urging individuals and businesses to show support for the environment by switching off their lights for one hour from 8.30pm.

Organising chairman and councillor Sean Wong said a hybrid approach would be adopted for the event.

“All SMC councillors will gather at the chairman’s office where the lights will be turned off.

“A Zoom link will also be provided for us to participate virtually,” he said in a press conference at Wisma Sanyan in Sibu.

Government agencies invited to participate include the Sibu Resident’s Office, Sibu District Office, Sibu Divisional Health Office, Sibu District Education Office and Sibu Environment Department.

Other participants include Sibu Natural Resources and Environment Board, Sarawak Energy Bhd, Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd, University of Technology Sarawak, Kolej Laila Taib, the Health Ministry Training Institute in Sibu and Rajang Port Authority.

“We also invited non-governmental organisations, community associations, churches, temples, hotels, banks and supermarkets to take part,” added Wong.
