Selangor Assembly Speaker's prerogative to comment on elected rep's status, says MB

IT IS the Speaker's prerogative to comment on the matter involving the status of a Selangor assemblyman, says Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

The Mentri Besar said he would leave the matter to the Selangor State Assembly Speaker.

"The Election Commission will make its decision based on the Speaker's announcement.

"Everything will be determined in accordance with the law," he added.

Amirudin said this when asked, after the launch of the "Fly the Jalur Gemilang" campaign in Shah Alam, about allegations that a state assemblyman had been declared bankrupt.

In a separate report, Speaker Lau Weng San had said that investigations were still underway.

He said the investigation would involve all parties, all constituencies and all other relevant aspects.

"We cannot make any assumptions," he told reporters on the sidelines of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting at Bangunan Dewan Negeri Selangor on Monday (Aug 3).

Meanwhile, during the "Fly the Jalur Gemilang" campaign event, Amirudin said the country should continue to uphold a moderate approach in politics.

"Malaysia has embraced moderation from Merdeka until today. This has always been our framework...it is about the kind of nation we want to build," he said.

He added that the Selangor government still has about one to two years to continue delivering on its commitments before the next state election.

As part of the "Fly the Jalur Gemilang" launch, Amirudin presented the national flag to local authority representatives at the Auditorium Dewan Jubli Perak of Bangunan Sultan Abdul Aziz in Shah Alam.

Among the newly appointed mayors and department heads who received the flags were Petaling Jaya City Council mayor Datuk Mohd Yazid Sairi, Subang Jaya City Council mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin @Md Daud, Selangor Deputy State Secretary (Management) Datuk Amirul Azizan Abd Rahim, Kuala Langat Municipal Council president Amri Ismail and Klang district officer Mohd Hasry Nor Mohd.
