CURRENT global uncertainty may test the human spirit, but light offers a timely reminder that hope endures.
That sentiment lies at the heart of Deepavali, or the Festival of Lights, which celebrates the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness.
Many shopping centres in Penang have put up festive installations that capture this timeless message, transforming retail spaces into picture-worthy expressions of hope and celebration.
Among them is Queensbay Mall, which “Wings of Light” display revolves around a majestic peacock with its tail feathers unfurled.

Colourful streamers, glowing diya and kolam motifs in rich jewel tones enhance the glowing spectacle of colour.
Centre manager Sylvester Soh said they drew inspiration from the vibrant plumage of the bird, long regarded as a symbol of good luck, prosperity and divine protection.
“We wanted to capture the essence of the season in a visually captivating way and spread positivity and hope to all,” he added.
Gurney Plaza’s “Deepavali in Splendour” decorations interpret the timeless beauty of Indian heritage through contemporary light installations.
A peacock similarly commands attention with its neon-illuminated tail feathers surrounded by multiple oil lamp towers.

Traditional Indian umbrellas adorned with intricate patterns, floral lamps, colourful blooms, giant kolam and hanging lotus-shaped lights add layers of interest.
“Weaving cultural elements with modern aesthetics allowed us to bring to life an enchanting setting that evokes beauty, purity and renewal,” said CapitaLand Investment Malaysia general manager (northern and east coast malls) Peter Chan.
At Gurney Paragon Mall, the “Colours of Deepavali Experience” brings a festive flourish similarly steeped in tradition.
Illuminated ornaments, decorative arches and intricate rangoli designs come together to create a welcoming atmosphere for all visitors to explore, admire and capture memorable moments.
Over in Sunway Carnival Mall, the “Deepavali: Colours of Light” setup features glowing diya, floral blooms and garlands in rich purple, pink, red and yellow tones.

Ornate patterns, inspired by the peacock’s tail feathers, flickering lights and elaborate kolam create a lively visual spectacle.
The mall’s general manager Chai Wen Yew said they wanted shoppers to fully immerse in the joys and traditions of the auspicious occasion.
“The movement and flow of colours symbolise the unity, togetherness and light that connect Malaysians of diverse backgrounds this special time of year,” he shared.
Deepavali takes on added significance at The Waterfront Shoppes as it is the first festivity following the mall’s recent soft opening.

Themed “Deepavali By The Water”, it is anchored by an installation at Play PEN – a flexible, experiential community space designed to create a journey of discovery.
Illuminated arches and decorated passageways lead to a central kolam in vivid shades of pink, orange and gold.
Its dynamic, layered design represents unity and togetherness.
A striking golden peacock rises at its core, serving as the focal point for visitors to take photographs and appreciate the festival’s cultural traditions.
