Selangor Speaker to summon assemblyman, verify eligibility

SHAH ALAM: Selangor Speaker Lau Weng San will summon a state assemblyman to verify his eligibility to be an elected representative.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said checks would also be conducted with the Insolvency Department, saying that the power to declare a seat vacant rests solely with the Speaker.

"I believe the Speaker will call him in and verify his status with the Insolvency Department so that his position can be determined before any announcement is made," he said a press conference after tabling the Second Selangor Plan (RS-2) at the Selangor State Assembly here on Friday (Aug 7).

There has been speculation over the possibility of a by-election in Selangor following a bankruptcy order against a state assemblyman but the uncertainty was put to rest after the High Court here set aside the order on Friday.

A copy of the court order sighted by the media showed that the assemblyman had successfully obtained an order to set aside a bankruptcy order after the High Court allowed his application under Section 105 of the Insolvency Act 1967. – Bernama
