The staging of the Sibu Off-Road Challenge delivered a big boost to the local tourism industry.
Sibu MP Oscar Ling said that such a grand event had the potential to attract greater participation from both local and international competitors, as well as visitors keen to experience what Sibu has to offer.
Aside from its natural beauty, he said Sibu also boasted a range of attractions, including a diverse selection of local cuisine and historical sites that would provide meaningful experiences for tourists.
“In addition to testing their abilities on challenging terrain, events such as this offer participants an opportunity to appreciate the culture, history and hospitality of the local community,” said Ling when launching the 10th edition of the tournament at Pulau Li Hua.
Ling emphasised that the event’s consistent organisation over the past decade had enhanced its profile and underlined its strong potential as a distinctive sports tourism product.
He also highlighted Sibu’s historical significance, citing Rumah Malaysia in Jalan Lanang as an important site linked to the Malaysia Agreement 1963.
He commended the organisers for their commitment in successfully bringing together four-wheel drive (4x4) enthusiasts from across Sarawak, making the event both vibrant and competitive.
“It is hoped that the event can be further expanded to attract even more participants and visitors, thereby contributing positively to Sibu’s economy and tourism industry,” he added.
Sibu 4x4 Owners Club chairman Ngu Kieh Hoh said the tournament drew 42 participants involving 21 4x4 vehicles over a three-day period.
He added that the competition, organised by the club, featured international participation, including two teams from Brunei, alongside entrants from Sabah, Saratok, Serian, Sibu and Kuching.
