Character brand’s growing popularity expected to amplify tourism
PENANG will host the world’s first Capybara Pimoo-themed fun walk on May 24, turning the global character brand into a tourism attraction in the heart of the city.
Penang tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the event reflected the state’s push to lead in creative tourism during Visit Malaysia 2026.
“This is the world’s first Capybara Pimoo fun walk, and we are transforming a global cultural trend into a unique experience for both local and international visitors,” he said at a press conference at Komtar.
The non-competitive 5km walk will begin at 7.30am from 1st Avenue, taking participants on a loop through George Town’s Unesco World Heritage Site via Magazine Road, Light Street, King Street, Chulia Street, Beach Street, Penang Road, Farquhar Street and Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah before returning to the starting point.
The organisers said there would be no road closures, as participants would walk along designated paths without disrupting traffic.

Hon Wai said the initiative would also support local businesses through collaborations with retail as well as food and beverage (F&B) operators.
“Events like this bring life to our urban centres while supporting the retail and F&B sectors,” he said.
1st Avenue Penang general manager Crystal Wong said the initiative reflected how shopping centres were evolving beyond retail.
“Malls today are no longer just retail spaces, but lifestyle destinations where people come together to create meaningful experiences and lasting memories,” she said.
Komik Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Teh Chun Kai said the event would be more than a typical fun walk, as it would offer a full immersive experience of the Capybara Pimoo as an intellectual property (IP).
“Throughout May, 1st Avenue will be transformed with Capybara Pimoo-themed decorations and participants will experience both the heritage elements of George Town and Capybara Pimoo along the route.
“After the walk, there will also be a Capybara Pimoo pop-up store at the mall, making this the world’s first full IP experience event.”
Chun Kai said the Capybara Pimoo theme was chosen for its growing popularity and calming appeal.
“It has become a widely loved character across communities; we want to use it to promote relaxation and positivity, especially at a time when many people are facing stress.
“This event is designed for all ages, from children to senior citizens, to come together, unwind and enjoy the experience,” he said.
Registration is open now.
Participants will receive a themed T-shirt, medal, e-certificate and other merchandise, along with entries for a lucky draw offering prizes that include a motorcycle.
