AN Energy Commission competition is driving student energy saving and innovation.
Muhammad Faris Naufal Ab Naufal, 11, who was named Young Energy Hero during the commission’s latest “Energy Smart Hero Search”, said he did not expect his three-minute video titled “Save the Earth and Our Pockets” to win.
“This video took just one day to finish, thanks to my mother Sarina Ayu Mohd Radzi’s help.
“This is also my first success in the many competitions I have joined.
“Thank you also to my teachers and friends who supported me,” said the student from SK Tasek Apong, Sungai Petani, Kedah.
Meanwhile, Cheah Rui Nee, 15, who was named Energy Innovation Hero, said she registering for the competition after attending the screening stage in June with her brother.
“Little did I know that I would be selected to advance to the semi-finals and be among the five participants in the finals.
“I had help from my father, Cheah Wee Kooi, 48, in producing my video titled ‘Energy Innovation Heroes’ which helped me win this competition,” said the SMK Convent Taiping, Perak, student in a Bernama report.
As first-place winners, they each took home a cash prize of RM3,000 that will be deposited into their National Education Savings Scheme (SSPN) Prime account, a trophy and an energy experiment kit.
Wira Bijak Tenaga 2026 secretariat representative Muhammad Faisal Yusoff said 66,880 students from 7,563 schools joined the competition, which was held in conjunction with “Karnival Bijak Tenaga 2026” at Indera Mulia Stadium in Ipoh, Perak.
He said there were 22,924 entries from Johor, 11,223 from Penang, 8,771 from Perak, 3,433 from Selangor and 3,164 from Negri Sembilan.
“Compared to earlier competitions, the Energy Smart Hero Search now covers broader topics such as energy transition, energy value chain, new tariff structure, electricity and gas safety,” he said.
The Energy Smart Hero Search is a continuation of the annual Energy Efficiency Challenge which started in 2014.
It now has a broader scope on energy literacy.
