MPS misses first-term tax goal

Shahman: MPS will step up enforcement against ratepayers with assessment tax arrears.

RM63.9mil collected against RM72.76mil target, but ratepayer compliance improved

Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) fell short of its 2026 first-term assessment tax target, collecting RM63.9mil out of RM72.76mil.

MPS president Shahman Jalaludin said outstanding arrears remained a concern, despite improved compliance among ratepayers.

He said RM4.11mil, or 35.74%, was collected from total arrears of RM11.5mil.

“The first-term payment period ended on Feb 28 and a late payment charge of RM20 was imposed from March 1 on accounts with arrears,” Shahman said after the full board meeting at Menara MPS in Bandar Baru Selayang, Selangor.

He said 75,755 late payment notices were issued on March 1, with recipients given until March 31 to settle their dues.

The warrant of attachment action started on April 15, with an additional RM100 imposed on accounts in arrears, the council president added.

In a bid to improve service delivery, MPS introduced a new system to deliver assessment tax bills through WhatsApp this year.

“A total of 97,463 accounts received bills through WhatsApp for the first term of 2026.

“Ratepayers who have not updated their details are urged to do so via the MPS digital portal so that their bills can be delivered to their devices,” said Shahman, elaborating that councillors had been asked to disseminate the information.

He said collections via the MyMPS portal amounted to RM29.76mil as of March 2026.

“Cashless transactions accounted for 87.78% of total collections,” said Shahman.
