Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) is looking to expand closed-circuit TV (CCTV) monitoring to curb persistent illegal dumping and waste problems.
Council president Shahman Jalaludin said the move was among several proposals raised during a three-day workshop in April involving MPS departments, councillors and KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM).
“The workshop examined on-ground issues and generated a range of solutions covering short-, medium- and long-term measures.
“Among the key proposals was increasing the number of CCTV cameras and integrating them into the MPS Command Centre to improve monitoring and enforcement.
“There are 700,000 residents in Selayang.
“Manpower is limited and we cannot cover all areas in the municipality,” he said after the monthly full board meeting at Menara MPS in Bandar Baru Selayang, Selangor.
Shahman said MPS was reviewing all proposals before deciding which ones to implement this year.
“A follow-up meeting will be held next week to finalise the proposals and determine budget requirements for implementation,” he said.
He assured that the local council would focus on improving public awareness, strengthening enforcement and enhancing internal work processes.
“Waste-related complaints surged in the first quarter of the year, driven partly by festive periods such as Thaipusam, Chinese New Year and Hari Raya,” said Shahman.
“MPS is hoping the measures implemented will curb illegal dumping and improve overall cleanliness across Selayang.”
MPS’ Solid Waste Management and Public Health Department issued 58 compounds based on recordings in its CCTV monitoring system up to March.
Last year, 264 compounds were issued, compared with 501 in 2024.
According to MPS, the cameras are in 12 locations: Jalan SBC 9; Lorong SBC 1; Rawang Millennium; Jalan Meranti in Rawang; Jalan Gombak; Jalan BRP 8/1 in Bukit Rahman Putra; Jalan Melati 20 in Batu Caves; Jalan Batu Caves in Gombak; Kota Emerald; Jalan TIB 1/5; Jalan SJ 1 in Taman Selayang Jaya and Pangsapuri Harmonis Gombak.
