A NEW cohort of students from Aichi University, Japan, has arrived in Skudai for a student exchange programme.
Southern University College acting president Prof Dr Leong Loong Kong said this marked the 11th year of collaboration between the two institutions.
“The long-running programme reflects steady progress in academic cooperation and continues to strengthen ties between Malaysia and Japan.
“It provides participants with an authentic environment to learn Chinese.
“This allows them to enhance their language proficiency while gaining exposure to Malaysia’s multicultural society,” he said in a statement in conjunction with a welcome ceremony for the students.
Prof Leong also encouraged students to immerse themselves fully, develop cross-cultural understanding and make the most of their experience in Johor.
Assoc Prof Hirotada Abe, from Aichi University’s Faculty of Modern Chinese Studies, urged students to support each other.
“Students should stay focused, despite potential challenges such as language barriers and cultural differences.
“They should also support one another and prioritise their well-being throughout the programme,” he said.
Aichi University student representative Usa Takasu said participants were eager to make the most of their four-month stay, focusing on improving their Chinese proficiency and gaining deeper insights into Malaysian society.
“We will be studying and living at Southern University College, supported by bilingual language partners to ease our adaptation.
“In addition to Chinese and English language classes, the curriculum includes subjects on Malay, Chinese and Indian cultures,” he said.
Takasu added that students would also take part in cultural arts such as tai chi, 24 Festive Drums, diabolo and calligraphy.
