SIBU is setting its sights on becoming a liveable and sustainable city by 2031.

Sarawak Deputy Premier and Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said: “That’s not just a slogan – it’s a commitment.

“A commitment to cleaner rivers, greener spaces, safer neighbourhoods and a future our children can inherit with pride,” he said at Sibu Municipal Council’s (SMC) Chinese New Year dinner.

In his speech read by deputy minister Datuk Michael Tiang, Dr Sim also said the priorities for Sibu this year were tourism and culture, in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026.

“From our iconic Central Market to our rich cultural heritage, we have so much to offer.

“Let’s show visitors why Sibu is worth the journey,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tiang said SMC would focus on sustainability, inclusivity and innovation, and had taken steps to improve environmental standards, urban management and digital governance.

These included launching a smart parking system to improve convenience for motorists and enhance urban efficiency, he said.

Among milestones cited was SMC winning the Local Authority category at Premier of Sarawak Environmental Awards, recognised as a Smart City Early Adopter by Housing and Local Government Ministry and Sibu earning the Asean Clean Tourist City Standard.

“These aren’t just awards or fancy titles,” Tiang said.

“They are a sign that when Sibu works together, the council, community and government hand in hand, we can achieve great things.”

Also present at the event were SMC chairman Clarence Ting and Lanang MP Alice Lau.
