SEVERAL design proposals are currently under consideration for a proposed bridge linking the town centre to Sibu’s west bank areas.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg will make the decision on the suitable design for the 400m bridge.

He said among the concepts being considered were a high-rise structure design inspired by Tower Bridge in London and a modern cable-stayed bridge.

He said the Public Works Department (JKR) was currently assessing the suitability of each design before submitting the proposal to the Premier for a final decision.

“At present, several design options are on the table, but the ultimate decision rests with the Premier to determine the most suitable bridge type,” he said after officiating the Kongsi Raya event.

Dr Sim, who is also state Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister, said the project would proceed to the appointment of consultants and tender process once a design was selected.

He added that the proposed bridge received a positive response from the Premier soon after it was submitted by Sibu Municipal councillor Kevin Lau Kor Jie last year.

Dr Sim said the construction of the bridge was expected to serve as a major catalyst for development in Sibu’s west bank area, which has previously seen limited attention.

He said improved access to the town centre would create opportunities for new economic growth and enhance property values in the area.

“Once completed, the west bank area has the potential to emerge as a new high-value development zone,” he added.

Dr Sim said Sarawak had built 20 bridges through state government initiatives.

“The decision to fund infrastructure projects independently has proven to be the right one, especially as construction costs have risen by more than 40%.”

He added that infrastructure development, including bridge construction, remained a priority for the state government in its efforts to accelerate development and improve the quality of life for the people of Sarawak.
