KUALA LUMPUR: The government has allocated RM1mil to support projects that will revitalise Downtown Kuala Lumpur.

The funds will be channeled through the Downtown Kuala Lumpur Grants Programme 2026, which started in 2020 and was spearheaded by placemaking organisation Think City with the Finance Ministry's support.

Each successful applicant will receive grants ranging from RM30,000 to RM100,000, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh.

She said revitalising the city centre requires strong partnerships between the government and the private sector, foundations, community organisations and other stakeholders.

"The best ideas rarely begin in government offices. They begin with people who care deeply about the places around them.

"Our role is to support those ideas, encourage partnerships and create the conditions for them to grow.

"So, if you are thinking about applying for these grants, begin with a place you care about. Create something that will continue making a difference long after the grant has ended," she said when launching the programme at ODEON Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday (July 8).

This year, the grant focuses on six areas, namely Museum and Gallery Network, Placemaking and Space Rejuvenation, Cultural Activation and Creative Content, Creative Business Seeding and Organisational Development, Community Engagement and Capacity Building as well as Digitalisation and Innovation, with priorities given to projects based in Downtown Kuala Lumpur.

Interested parties with a stake in the future of Downtown Kuala Lumpur are welcome to apply.

Applications are open until Aug 21, with the projects’ implementation running from November 2026 to June 2027.

Also present was Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Fadlun Mak Ujud and Think City managing director Datuk Hamdan Abdul Majeed.
