Sarawak government wants to make powerboat racing synonymous with Sibu given its natural advantage with Sungai Rajang.

“When we talk about powerboat racing, I want people to immediately think of Sibu because the river here is wide and suitable for such events,” said state Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

He cited the International Dragon Boat Race in Kuching as an example of an event generating strong international interest.

“Each year when we organise the race, the number of applications is very high, but we usually limit participation to just 22 or 23 countries.

“The event attracts more than 2,000 paddlers and has become one of the most anticipated sporting events in Kuching.

“In Bintulu, we have the International Kite Festival.

“There are also other international events such as the WOW Games which draws participants from around the world.”

Speaking after flagging off Sibu International Powerboat Race 2026 at Pulau Li Hua, Abdul Karim said he has tried to identify a suitable sport closely associated with Sibu.

“While we have the Borneo Cultural Festival held for many years and the International Dance Festival, these are more cultural in nature.

“On the sporting side, I do not see many international-level events in Sibu, apart from the powerboat race.

“Given the strong response to the race, it is possible that this could be developed further.”

He proposed the event be held in a specific month every year so that it could be included in the state tourism calendar.

“If organised consistently and at a larger scale, such an event would bring significant benefits.

“The influx of visitors from outside Malaysia and other parts of Sarawak into Sibu would have a positive impact, particularly on the local economy.

“The hotel industry, F&B sector, hospitality services and transportation sector would benefit from increased tourism activities.”

The three-day event saw the participation of 251 racers from across the state and Brunei, gaining entry into the Malaysia Book of Records for “The Most Number of Powerboats in a Single Event”.
