THE Korean Society in Malaysia continues to support youth development through a RM12,500 sponsorship of maritime training for Sea Scouts.
Malaysian Scout Association (PPM) international commissioner Norma Noordin said the contribution enabled eight Sea Scouts from Troop-30 Sea Scouts (Open) Segambut District, Kuala Lumpur and Troop-07 Sea Scouts (Open) Fort District, Melaka to participate in a Competent Crew Course in Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan.
She said the programme, conducted in collaboration with Ray Nautics Resources, offered structured, hands-on training based on internationally recognised sailing standards, covering essential skills such as sail handling, navigation, berthing procedures and emergency response.
“The programme not only enhances technical competencies, but also instils discipline, teamwork and self-confidence among participants,” she said in a statement reported by Bernama.
She said the programme, initially planned for five participants, was expanded through effective collaboration and would incorporate a peer mentoring approach among trainees to ensure sustainability.
Meanwhile, participant Aviynesh Kumar described the programme as a valuable opportunity that strengthened his leadership and practical sailing skills.
“As a Sea Scout and Troop Leader of SEAL30 working towards my King Scout Award, this sailing experience has greatly strengthened my leadership, practical skills and abilities as a competent crew,” he said.
Another participant, Mirsha Kumar, described the programme as a transformative journey that strengthened both her personal character and sailing capabilities.
“Each session challenged me to step out of my comfort zone, adapt to changing conditions at sea and take on greater responsibility.
“This initiative has opened doors for young people like me to gain real-world experience,” she said.
Another participant, Zoe Ng Yun Rou, said the training provided valuable hands-on exposure and meaningful learning experiences.
“One of the most memorable experiences was during our first lesson when we encountered engine problems and heavy rain.
“It was a challenging situation but it taught me the importance of resilience, communication and teamwork in overcoming unexpected difficulties,” she said.
