Plans for the construction of the Ipoh Sentral bus terminal are being worked on by the state government and Perak Transit Bhd.
Public transport committee chairman Datuk Mohd Zolkafly Harun said the existing bus station did not meet the Public Land Transport Agency’s criteria for safety and comfort.
“Its location is also no longer strategic, making it difficult for the movement of buses. Major roads surrounding the station are also often congested.
“There has not been any infrastructure upgrade in the past 60 years as the bus station in Medan Kidd does not belong to the state government,” he said in his Facebook post recently.
Mohd Zolkafly added the state government was in the midst of looking for a new site to construct the integrated terminal, which would be able to link with other public transport such as express buses, taxis and train services. He also stressed that the Perak government would make it a priority to improve public transport and infrastructure in rural areas.
“We are also hoping to have mini bus services to increase route accesses to rural areas, as well as areas where the lanes are narrow.
“The frequency and number of buses along major routes and destinations will also be increased to make it convenient for the people,” he added.
Mohd Zolkafly added that the number of bus stops in rural areas would also be increased to make it easier for people to wait for the bus.He said the local authorities had also been urged to carry out infrastructure upgrades at bus terminals in each district.
