Did over 2,000 Johor students playing Baby Shark break a world record?

Verdict:

True

A total of 2,869 participants learning how to play 'Baby Shark' on the ukelele broke the Guinness World Record for having the largest music lesson in the world.

Organised by Grownce Sdn Bhd (Malaysia) at SJKC Kuo Kuang 2 in Johor Bahru, students aged between seven and 12 years old took part in this music lesson, which lasted about 33 minutes.

Each student had their own ukelele, and all 2,869 of them watched a single instructor, Ric Cho, on stage and from one of the five screens set up streaming live around the venue.

Cho taught them how to hold the instrument, a few strumming techniques, and finished the lesson off with a splendid rendition of "Baby Shark" with all participants playing along.

A year later, English jazz-pop singer-songwriter Jamie Collum attempted to break the record by holding a virtual piano lesson online.

The musician, who was joined by special guests including Robbie Williams and Sigrid, taught schoolchildren to play the Christmas carol 'In The Bleak Midwinter' on the piano.

"You know it's been a year where we've been so far apart from each other, a lot of kids, a lot of people have not had access to music lessons this year in quite the same way."

"Sharing stuff like this online is just another way to sharing your music and sharing another way of making music together," he said.

However, his virtual piano lesson reportedly only recorded 2,282 people, just short of the 2,869 who participated in the 'Baby Shark' ensemble.
