Did Malaysia once ban rock concerts in the country?

During the golden era of rock music, there was a time when rock concerts were banned in Malaysia.
Although the government then imposed restrictions on rock music and performers, it did not permanently ban all rock music altogether.
In September 1986, the government announced a ban on outdoor rock concerts following a fracas at a Battle of the Bands event in Penang where cans, chairs, among others, were thrown around.
The restriction was initially reported as applying to all outdoor rock concerts. However, it was quickly narrowed.
On Sept 10, 1986, the government then decided that the ban would apply only to heavy metal bands.
It described heavy metal as anti-social and said the government was concerned about its effect on young people.
However, fans could still buy records and listen to the music at home, as well as in nightclubs and discos.
Rock musicians also faced another well-known restriction several years later.
From 1990 until Nov 1, 1992, rock stars with hair longer than shoulder length were barred from appearing on Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) television channels.
Their songs were also not played on RTM radio stations, and concert permits could be withheld if performers did not comply with the grooming rule.
The restriction ended in 1992 after members of local groups Search and Wings had their hair cut during a live Selamat Pagi Malaysia broadcast.
So, Malaysia did, at one stage, ban outdoor rock concerts before limiting the measure to heavy metal acts, and later placed restrictions on long-haired rock musicians.
But the broader claim that all rock music was completely banned in Malaysia is too sweeping.
