JOHOR BARU: MCA is urging the Election Commission (EC) to look into advertisements said to be defamatory published in two Chinese-language newspapers during the Johor polls campaign period.
Johor MCA treasurer Senator Datuk Ng Keng Heng said the advertisements, which appeared in the Chinese dailies on Saturday (July 4) and Sunday (July 5) did not state the party responsible for publishing them.
"This is an offence under Section 11(1)(c) of the Election Offences Act 1954, which requires election advertisements to state the names and addresses of the printer and publisher.
"We have lodged an official report so the EC can investigate the matter immediately," he said after submitting the complaint at the Johor EC office at Wisma Persekutuan here on Sunday (July 5).
On Saturday (July 4), MCA secretary-general Datuk Chong Sin Woon alleged that the advertisement, which urged voters not to support MCA and instead vote for Pakatan Harapan, contained false and defamatory claims.
He said it falsely creates the impression that MCA has entered into a political pact with another party.
He urged voters to reject negative campaigning and to focus on choosing a government to lead Johor over the next five years rather than spread misleading claims about political parties.
