KUALA LUMPUR: Puteri Umno is hoping for a bigger role in the next Melaka state election, with its chief saying the wing should not be left out of Barisan Nasional’s candidates list.
Datuk Nurul Amal Mohd Fauzi said she hoped the wing would get to contest between three and five seats, but left the final decision to the party leadership.
“Preparations by the wing at the branch, division and state levels are well underway, and I hope for the best as we await the state election.
“The wing should not be left behind when it comes to fielding candidates. In the Negri Sembilan state election, despite Barisan not contesting all the seats, the wing was not left behind and we had one candidate,” she told a press conference here yesterday.
In the Aug 1 Negri polls, Puteri Umno Rasah division chief Siti Nur Umaira Hasim won the Labu seat in a three-cornered fight.
Asked whether there had been any discussion with the party’s top leadership on fielding Puteri Umno candidates for the Melaka state election, Nurul Amal said nothing formal had taken place.
“The party is currently focused on the Umno general assembly which will take place from Sept 9 to 12. Maybe we will talk after that.
“Puteri just wants to ensure that there is representation. We are not setting a specific number of seats,” she added.
