Paperless initiative has saved civil service almost RM2mil

KUALA LUMPUR: Implementing the paperless initiative in the civil service has successfully reduced the use of 116,405 reams of paper, resulting in a cost savings of RM1.99mil in just under five months.

(Based on the weight of a ream of 80gsm (grams per square metre) A4 paper, this is estimated to be a total of 250 tonnes.)

Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said this achievement was reported during the Digital Economy and Fourth Industrial Revolution Council (MED4IR) meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Monday (July 29).

"The focus was on the MyDigital ID and MyGov initiatives, as well as expanding digital access across the country's higher education institutions. The meeting also agreed on efforts to develop more comprehensive digital talent through the MyMahir National AI Council for Industry," he said in a Facebook post on Monday.

Shamsul Azri, who is also the Government Cluster chairman, said Malaysia aims to emerge as an Artificial Intelligence (AI) nation by 2030 through the implementation of Malaysia Digital 2030, which was launched by the Prime Minister on Monday.

On Feb 7, Shamsul Azri said the civil service would begin implementing a paperless approach for simple transactions starting Feb 9, in line with efforts to accelerate digitalisation within the government administration. – Bernama
