Johor polls: Nomination process underway at all 56 centres

JOHOR BARU: All 56 nomination centres for the 16th Johor State Election opened simultaneously at 9am Saturday (June 27).

Candidates have one hour, until 10am, to submit their nomination forms to the returning officer (RO) at their respective centres, before the list of eligible candidates is officially announced.

Once the verification process is completed, a 14-day campaign period begins as set by the Election Commission (EC), running until 11.59pm on July 10.

For the submission process, nomination papers must be handed to the RO at the nomination centre by the candidate, proposer and seconder, or any two of them, or any one of them.

Supporters of various political parties began gathering as early as 6.30am to show support for their respective candidates.

On Firday (June 26), the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) forecast rain in Johor Baru, Muar, Batu Pahat, Kota Tinggi, Pontian, Tangkak and Kulai this morning, while Segamat, Kluang and Mersing are expected to be clear.

MetMalaysia also forecast thunderstorms in most districts, including Johor Bahru, Segamat, Kluang and Kota Tinggi in the afternoon.

To ensure smooth proceedings, police with assistance from the People's Volunteer Corps (Rela) are maintaining strict security and traffic control around nomination centre areas to prevent any untoward incidents.

According to Election Commission (EC) statistics, a total of 2,727,926 voters are eligible to vote in this election, comprising 2,703,175 ordinary voters, 12,041 military personnel and their spouses, and 12,710 police personnel and their spouses.

The EC has set July 7 for early voting and July 11 for polling day. - Bernama
