KUALA LUMPUR: A new initiative aimed at building a sustainable local economic ecosystem to help reduce the cost of living pressures faced by Malaysians has been launched in conjunction with the country's 69th National Day celebrations.
The Ekosistem Warisan Negara project, led by former top cop Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim (pic), will focus on essential sectors including retail, healthcare, education and other services related to daily living.
The former Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order department (KDNKA) director said the initiative was becoming increasingly important amid uncertainty in global fuel supplies, which could potentially drive up the cost of goods and place additional pressure on household spending.
“We have a responsibility, together with other organisations and the private sector, to play a more active role alongside the government in addressing the cost of living issue.
“The solution cannot depend solely on government subsidies, especially when the prices of goods and supplies continue to fluctuate due to global market factors,” he said.
The implementation of the initiative will begin in Melaka, with an initial focus on strengthening local grocery stores, particularly those in rural areas, he added.
"This will involve coordinating supplies, improving stock management, providing operational support and developing a stronger retail network.
"The initiative aims to help small shop operators become more competitive and gain access to supplies at better prices, while creating a more stable foundation to help manage the prices of daily necessities for consumers," he said.
The ecosystem will subsequently be expanded in stages to other sectors that directly affect the people's quality of life and cost of living, including healthcare, education and other essential services, Azmi said.
The initiative has also received a positive response from Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, in line with the state government's efforts to prioritise the welfare and interests of the people.
