Trip.com data reveals Malaysia's rise as South-East Asia's most dynamic travel market
MALAYSIA's tourism ambition is not a modest one. Visit Malaysia Year 2026 set a vision of 35.6 million international arrivals and RM147.1bil in tourism expenditure, goals that require not just government ambition, but genuine industry partnership to sustain.
For Trip.com, a leading global one-stop travel platform, that partnership has been a deliberate and long-standing commitment, one that predates the headline growth figures and extends well beyond the bookings themselves.
As Malaysia marks another year as an independent nation, the story of how the country is finding its place on the world's travel map is one Trip.com has had a front-row seat to and a hand in building.
A partnership rooted in shared purpose
Trip.com's investment in Malaysia's tourism ecosystem took a significant step in 2024, when Trip.com Group formalised its commitment through a Memorandum of Collaboration with Tourism Malaysia.
The agreement was built on a shared belief: that Malaysia's potential as a destination, its cultural richness, geographic diversity and growing international appeal, could reach further with the right platform and the right partnership behind it.
Leveraging Trip.com Group's global reach, the collaboration is focused on attracting more Chinese and international visitors to Malaysia, with an emphasis not just on volume, but on the quality and depth of experience they discover here.
That commitment has since been put into practice through a sustained and deliberate effort to grow Malaysia's tourism story on both fronts, outbound and inbound as well as international and domestic, because Trip.com understands that a thriving travel ecosystem requires investment in all directions.
Bringing Malaysia's destinations to life
That investment is visible in the campaigns Trip.com has developed in close partnership with Malaysia's tourism industry.
For Malaysians exploring their own backyard, Meh Lah Johor and Hello Penang, developed alongside the Malaysia Budget Hotel Association (MyBHA), reframed domestic travel not as a fallback, but as a rewarding choice.
These were not generic sales campaigns, but deliberate efforts to shine a light on the character and charm of Malaysian destinations and to remind Malaysians that some of the most compelling journeys begin closer to home.
That spirit continues with an ongoing Port Dickson On Sale campaign, running from Aug 25 – Sept 12 in partnership with Tourism Malaysia and the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH). Port Dickson has long held a quiet place in the hearts of Malaysian families, a familiar stretch of coastline, unhurried and accessible. The campaign is an invitation to rediscover it, supported by targeted promotions and the kind of curation that turns a weekend getaway into something worth planning for. In choosing Port Dickson as the focus, Trip.com and its partners are making a deliberate statement: that every Malaysian destination, not just the well-known ones, deserves its moment.
For Malaysians heading outbound, destination-led campaigns including Go China, Go Thailand, Indonesia Calling and Hello Vietnam bring curated, accessible offers to the routes Malaysians travel most, ensuring that when a traveller is ready to book, Trip.com is there with something worth booking.

Malaysia’s global appeal
The results of this sustained investment are beginning to show in ways that extend well beyond Trip.com's own platform.
In the first half of 2026, Malaysia recorded the highest year-on-year growth in flight and hotel spending across South-East Asia on Trip.com's platform, with both categories achieving triple-digit growth compared to the same period last year. ¹ These figures reflect a destination that has been steadily, purposefully built.
China remains the leading source of inbound flight arrivals on Trip.com's platform, but the picture is broadening considerably. Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam are contributing meaningfully to inbound numbers, while travellers from France, the United Kingdom and Australia are recording some of the strongest growth in hotel spend, drawn not by a single landmark, but by the layered experience that Malaysia offers.² Kuala Lumpur anchors the journey, as it always has, but Johor Baru is gaining traction as a gateway destination and cities like Miri and Sibu in East Malaysia are emerging as fast-growing hubs for a new generation of visitors willing to look beyond the familiar.²
Beyond campaigns and collaborations, major events have proven to be some of the most powerful forces in shaping how the world sees Malaysia. When K-pop boy band BTS is set to perform across two dates in Kuala Lumpur this December, Trip.com saw activated users surge by over 640% on presale day alone, with more than half of all travellers booking during the concert period were first-time members – new entrants into the travel ecosystem, drawn by the pull of a live experience.³ Similarly, following the announcement of Formula 1’s (F1) return to Sepang, hotel bookings in the area climbed by over 1,600% within days, while Sepang entered Trip.com's top five most-searched hotel destinations globally.⁴ These moments do not simply move bookings. They move the needle on how Malaysia is perceived and reinforce what Trip.com has long believed: that a country with Malaysia's depth of experience has no shortage of reasons to offer the world.
"Malaysia's travel growth in 2026 is a story we have had the privilege of watching from the inside," says Trip.com Malaysia general manager Stephane Thong.
"What makes it compelling is not the scale alone, it is what the data reflects about how Malaysians are travelling and how the world is beginning to see us.
“We are witnessing a traveller who is more intentional and more experience-driven than ever before and a destination that is earning its place on the global stage.”
She adds: “Trip.com's role here has always been long-term, as a partner in Malaysia's travel growth, not simply a platform for bookings. That is a commitment we do not take lightly and one we intend to build on."
At its most fundamental, every booking made on Trip.com tells a small part of a larger story. An international traveller booking a hotel in Penang brings spending into a local economy. A Malaysian family planning a weekend in Port Dickson keeps domestic tourism moving. Multiply that across hundreds of journeys and the platform becomes something more than a marketplace, but quiet, consistent contributor to the ambitions that Visit Malaysia Year 2026 was built around.
The journey ahead
As Malaysia's travel ecosystem grows in confidence and complexity, Trip.com continues to invest in the tools that help tell its story to the world.
Trip.Best, which surfaces top-ranked destinations, hotels and attractions based on real platform data and traveller insights, has become a meaningful vehicle for putting Malaysian cities on the radar of international travellers who might otherwise have overlooked them.
TripGenie, Trip.com's AI-powered travel assistant, supports travellers from the earliest stages of inspiration through to arrival and in 2025, Malaysian travellers ranked among its top five most active markets globally, a reflection of how readily this audience embraces technology when it genuinely makes travel better.
As this milestone year unfolds, Malaysia's travel story stands as something worth marking. Not simply because the numbers are strong, but because of what they represent, a destination that has invested in itself, a traveller that has grown into their own and a platform that has chosen, deliberately and consistently, to be part of that progress.
The most compelling chapters, for Malaysia and for the travellers who choose it, are still ahead.
