Conference of Rulers meeting postponed

KUALA LUMPUR: A Conference of Rulers meeting scheduled to be held on Tuesday (June 23) has been postponed.

No official statement has been issued for the last minute cancellation.

It is reliably learnt that five senior Rulers including His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia had met a few days ago.

They had agreed for the postponement of the conference scheduled for June 23 to 25.

It is understood that the meeting was postponed amid a brewing dispute over the throne of Negri Sembilan.

They have privately expressed their concerns and preferred the matter to be resolved by the Ruler of Negri Sembilan.

"The Rulers prefer the matter be settled and not drag on to the courts," one royal watcher said.

On June 5, Negri Sembilan's Undang and the Tunku Besar Tampin have officially proclaimed Tunku Nadzaruddin Tuanku Ja'afar as the 12th Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan.

The proclamation came in the wake of the Undang's removal of Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir as the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan in April.

Comptroller of the Royal Household Datuk Azizi Mohamad Ali has since declared the ceremony as illegal while the Negri Sembilan state government has refused to accept or recognise a declaration on the removal.

On June 5, Negri Sembilan Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun announced the dissolution of the state assembly.

Royal sources have said the Rulers were concerned whether it was appropriate to proceed given the two claimants to the throne of Negri Sembilan.

The last time the Conference of Rulers was called off was due to the Covid-19 movement restrictions in 2021.
