Enforcement officer remanded over RM190,000 bribery allegations

KUALA LUMPUR: A Perak enforcement officer has been remanded for three days over allegations of accepting about RM190,000 in bribes from a cooking oil packaging company.

Sources said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is investigating allegations that the officer accepted money in exchange for helping the company obtain subsidised cooking oil quota approval from a ministry and for not taking enforcement action against the company.

The remand order, which runs until Sunday (Aug 16), was issued by assistant senior registrar Mohd Shazmeer Zamhari at the Ipoh Magistrate's Court on Friday following an application by Perak MACC.

"The male suspect, in his 40s, was arrested at about 5pm on Thursday after he turned up to give his statement at the Taiping MACC office.

"Initial investigations found that the suspect allegedly committed the offences between 2022 and 2026.

"He is believed to have received the bribes through 19 cheques deposited into his personal bank account," a source said.

Perak MACC director Azizul Ahmad Sarkawi, when contacted, confirmed the arrest.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
