PETALING JAYA: Transport Minister Anthony Loke (pic) has criticised several Kelantan state assemblymen for organising a “Mat Motor” convoy to Sultan Ismail Petra Airport in Kota Baru, describing the move as “highly irresponsible” and a potential threat to public safety.
In a statement on Saturday (April 25), Loke questioned the decision to hold a large-scale motorcycle convoy in a strategic and security-sensitive area such as an airport, warning that it could disrupt operations and inconvenience passengers.
He raised concerns over possible traffic congestion, asking whether organisers would take responsibility if passengers were to miss their flights and incur losses.
“Did the organisers obtain the necessary approvals from the relevant authorities before proceeding with the event?
“To ensure safety and maintain smooth airport operations, the Road Transport Department has been instructed to work with traffic police to set up roadblocks and inspect all motorcycles entering the airport area,” he said in a Facebook post on Saturday (April 25).
The motorcycle convoy, scheduled to take place from 5pm on Saturday, is being organised by several state assemblymen from PAS and Kelantan PAS Youth.
It is set to begin in Kota Lama, pass through the airport and city centre, and end near the AEON Mall in Kota Baru.
