Sarawak minister urges action on flight disruptions, high airfares

KUCHING: The federal and state Transport Ministries should resolve the issue of flight disruptions currently affecting several airlines, says a Sarawak minister.

State Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said flight delays and cancellations would negatively impact Sarawak's tourism industry.

He cited the experience of two Malaysian delegates who were unable to attend an International Council on Monuments and Sites meeting here on Tuesday (June 8) because their flight from Kuala Lumpur was cancelled.

"Now I'm getting worried because we have so many events, including the Rainforest World Music Festival, which involves thousands of people coming to Sarawak.

"If their confirmed (flight) tickets are suddenly cancelled, what will happen? It will definitely affect arrivals," he said on Wednesday (June 10).

Abdul Karim also called on both Transport Ministries to look into high airfares, saying that his recent flight to Kuala Lumpur cost RM7,000.

"Don't let the airlines have a free say in determining ticket prices.

"It's not fair to the public," he said.
