KUALA LUMPUR/TOKYO (Bernama): Malaysians in Japan have been advised to remain vigilant and closely monitor local conditions following a magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck the Kumamoto Prefecture in the Kyushu region.
The Embassy of Malaysia in Japan, in an advisory posted on Facebook, also advised Malaysians to refer to the Japan Meteorological Agency’s (JMA) website at www.jma.go.jp/jma/index.html, for the latest updates, warnings and advisories.

Japan’s Kyodo News reported that tsunami advisories were issued for the Ariake and Yatsushiro seas following the quake but were later lifted.
Many are feared injured as authorities scrambled to assess the extent of the damage amid reports of collapsed buildings, fires, power outages and traffic disruptions after the earthquake.
At a press conference, the weather agency urged people to remain alert for quakes of similar intensity over the next few days and warned of heatstroke as temperatures in Kumamoto are expected to reach 35 degree Celcius or higher, the news agency reported.
