KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional have made their partnership official for the upcoming Melaka state election.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday (Oct 28) night, Umno secretary-general Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki stated that a memorandum of understanding was signed by leaders of both coalitions today (Oct 28).
A photo on the FB post showed Barisan and Umno leaders Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir and Asyraf smiling and holding the MoU document alongside Perikatan and PAS leaders Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan and Datuk Idris Ahmad.
“This afternoon saw the successful formalisation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Barisan and its strategic partner, PAS, representing the parties under Perikatan, in preparation for the 16th Melaka election.
“May the spirit of Muslim unity (ummah) and the Blue Wave continue to flourish and gain momentum in the land of Melaka during the state election, for the benefit of the state's prosperity and stability and the well-being of its people,” posted Asyraf.
The agreement between Barisan and PAS, representing parties under Perikatan Nasional (PN), marks a significant development in Melaka’s political landscape ahead of the Melaka state election.
Barisan and PAS have been political rivals, competing for Malay-Muslim voters.
In the 2021 Melaka state election, Barisan won 21 of the 28 state assembly seats, while Perikatan secured only two.
The current cooperation aims to reduce competition between the two sides through a seat-sharing arrangement, with Barisan contesting 21 seats and Perikatan contesting the remaining seven.
