MELAKA: Campaign materials for the Melaka polls that endanger the public or breach regulations will be removed, says Datuk Shadan Othman.
The Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) Mayor said they would not hesitate to act against flags, buntings and other materials that violate local government rules or Election Commission regulations.
"Those putting up flags must think about the safety of others and not put them up at road junctions," he said at the MBMB Media and Community Appreciation Event at a leading hotel here on Wednesday (Oct 28).
Shadan said campaign materials were strictly prohibited on government buildings and MBMB assets, including bus stops.
He said no campaign materials had been removed so far, with enforcement set to begin after nomination day on Oct 31.
He also expected campaigning to gather momentum after nomination day.
Shadan said each party or candidate must pay an advertising deposit of RM5,000, an election advertising permit fee of RM2,000 and a RM50 processing fee before putting up campaign materials.
"If they fail to take down their flags within a week after the polls, we will forfeit their deposit," he said.
