PETALING JAYA: The Immigration Department has arrested 20 suspects after raids at suspected scam call centres operating out of luxury residences.
Immigration director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said that the arrests were part of a special operation along Jalan San Peng in Pudu on Tuesday (Oct 27).
"Following information from the public and two weeks of intelligence gathering, the enforcement team raided four residential units and arrested 20 people, comprising five Taiwanese men, four Chinese men, four Indian men, four Thai men, two Thai women and an Indian woman, aged between 23 and 43," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Oct 28).
Various foreign currencies as well as a Thai language scam script were seized, alongside other computer equipment.
"The syndicate would rent luxury residential properties to serve as operation centres for investment scams.
"The syndicate is operated by groups from China, Taiwan, Thailand and India, with each group targeting victims in specific countries.
"Investigations found that the foreign workers were not allowed to leave the premises freely. Food was obtained through food delivery services," he said.
Investigations showed that the group would operate from 8am to 8pm and had been active for around a month.
