KUALA LUMPUR: The investigation report into Thursday’s LRT derailment incident at the Chan Sow Lin station is expected to be completed within 30 days, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
Loke said the Transport Ministry had established a special task force independent of Prasarana Malaysia Bhd to determine the cause of the incident.
“This task force does not involve any representatives from Prasarana. It has been set up to independently investigate whether the incident was caused by human error, a system malfunction or technical failure,” he told reporters after inspecting the affected section of the LRT track at Chan Sow Lin on Friday (May 29).
Loke said the task force would be led by Air Accident Investigation Bureau (BSKU) chief inspector Brig Gen Tan Chee Kee, who has extensive experience leading accident investigations.
He added that the task force’s terms of reference and membership would be announced in the near future.
“The final report will be submitted to the Cabinet and will also be made public in the interest of transparency,” he said.
Meanwhile, Loke said the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) would open an investigation paper under the Land Public Transport Act 2010.
“This special task force is not about assigning blame but identifying the cause of the incident. Any punitive action will be determined by Apad after investigations are completed,” he said.
At the same time, Loke stressed that it was too early to draw any conclusions as investigations had only just begun.
“I do not want to be unfair to any party. Whether it was caused by negligence or a system failure can only be determined through a thorough investigation,” he said.
In the early hours of Thursday (May 28), a train on the Ampang/Sri Petaling Line derailed while passing through a track switch area at Chan Sow Lin Station.
Rapid KL previously said there were 25 passengers on board at the time of the incident, and all were safely evacuated without injuries.
