PUTRAJAYA: E-hailing companies should consider introducing a women-only option, matching female passengers with female drivers, says Anthony Loke (pic).
The Transport Minister said he had suggested the feature to an e-hailing company after the introduction of a carpooling service.
Speaking at the Wanita DAP national congress yesterday, Loke said he requested a women-only carpooling system with female drivers and passengers to address frequent complaints of sexual harassment on public transport.
Grab recently rolled out its Women-Only Rides (Beta) feature for advance bookings, matching female passengers with female driver-partners.
Separately, Loke said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim need not give in to calls for an early dissolution of Parliament as long as he continued to command majority support in the Dewan Rakyat.
The DAP secretary-general said there was no reason for an early election as the current Parliament term ends in December 2027, leaving about 15 months to complete the unity government’s reform agenda.
“There is no need to call for a general election at this juncture, as there is still time before the current Parliament term ends,” he said.
Loke said public disagreements among component parties did not necessarily affect governance, adding that none had left the unity government.
“As long as every party still sticks to the government, then in terms of governance, we should be able to govern the country.”
Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had recently voiced support for an early 16th General Election, which Anwar said could be considered.
On the Melaka election, speculated to be held next month, Loke said DAP had not decided whether it would work with Barisan and was not involved in negotiations between Pakatan Harapan elections director Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and Melaka Barisan chairman Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh.
