JOHOR BARU: Two individuals have been arrested over a chemical leak at a waste management facility in the Pasir Gudang industrial area here.
Dr Mohd Famey Yusoff from the Johor Environment Department said the two – the 34-year-old owner and the 41-year-old supervisor of the scheduled waste facility – were detained at 8am on Friday (June 12).
"They were apprehended over environmental law breaches," he said in a statement on Friday (June 12).
Mohd Famey said in the incident on Thursday (June 11), a thick, orange-yellow smoke plume was released across the Johor Strait.
He said initial investigations found the facility had failed to abide by scheduled waste management procedures and license regulations issued under Section 16 of the Environmental Quality Act 1974.
"We also conducted air quality monitoring in areas located close to the facility and no hazardous gas was detected in the area as of June 12," added Mohd Famey.
He called upon the public to report any activities related to air pollution at the 24-hour toll free line 1-800 88 2727 or email to aduan_k@doe.gov.my and DOE e-aduan portal at https://eaduan.doe.gov.my
