Abdul Halim suitable to lead MACC due to judicial background, says PM

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim describes the appointment of former High Court judge Datuk Seri Abdul Halim Aman as the new chief commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) as appropriate to helm the agency.

The Prime Minister said this was because Abdul Halim had a background in the judiciary and has no involvement in any major businesses or in the country’s political parties.

“So, I think he is suitable to lead MACC and to continue enhancing MACC’s capabilities.

“I discussed the matter with His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, yesterday (April 24) to consider his appointment for a two-year term,” he said after attending the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission’s (MCMC) National Information Dissemination Centre (Nadi) Recognition Ceremony as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Digital Transformation Centre at Nadi Kubang Semang here Saturday (April 25).

Anwar also expressed appreciation to Tan Sri Azam Baki, who currently holds the post and whose term is scheduled to end on May 12, for his service during his tenure.

Earlier, Sultan Ibrahim consented to the appointment of Abdul Halim, 69, as the new MACC chief commissioner, effective May 13.

Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said the appointment is in accordance with Section 5(1) of the MACC Act (Act 694). - Bernama
