Croc sighted at Tanjung Aru beach


KOTA KINABALU: Beachgoers at Tanjung Aru beach here have been urged to exercise caution following the sighting of a crocodile.

The crocodile was spotted in waters off Tanjung Aru Beach 2 by Civil Defence Force (APM) manning the Beach Rescue Tower at about 7.50am yesterday and the public was immediately alerted to stay away from water activities.

Kota Kinabalu APM officer Captain Aizex Junior said the on-duty personnel noticed a moving object in the water before realising it was a crocodile.

Following the discovery, he said beach rescue personnel immediately carried out continuous monitoring in the area to ensure the safety of visitors.

“A red flag was also raised as a warning, and visitors were advised not to carry out any water activities for the time being,” he said.

Public announcements regarding the crocodile sighting were also made around the beach area to inform beachgoers.

APM has also informed the Kota Kinabalu District Operations Control Centre and the Sabah Wildlife Department about the sighting.

Crocodile sightings at the Tanjung Aru beach have occurred periodically in the last several years.
