Middle east conflict: Malaysia expresses sympathy, support for Qatar, Bahrain

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has expressed its sympathy and support for Qatar and Bahrain, which are facing threats to their sovereignty, infrastructure and national security following Iran’s retaliatory action against attacks by the Israeli regime together with the United States.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this was conveyed during separate phone conversations yesterday with Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and, later, with Bahrain’s Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa.

Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said they exchanged views on the current developments in Qatar and Bahrain as well as in the Middle East region following the conflict involving Israel, the United States and Iran.

"I also appreciate the efforts of the governments of Qatar and Bahrain in ensuring the safety and welfare of Malaysians residing in both countries.

"We agreed that all parties should prioritise peaceful approaches and exercise restraint from any actions that could jeopardise regional stability and security,” he said in a Facebook post last night.

Anwar also expressed hope that the holy month of Ramadan would strengthen the unity of the ummah and create space for more lasting peace and stability in the region and around the world. - Bernama
