KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Ewon Benedick urged Malaysian youth to take responsibility for maintaining national peace, harmony, and independence during a local celebration.

Officiating the Penampang-level National and Sabah Day celebrations on Wednesday (Aug 12), Ewon called on younger generations to continue the legacy established by past leaders.

“Youth today get to enjoy developments after independence, and of course they have to play their part, because they have a huge responsibility to carry on the legacy of independence,” he said.

The Penampang MP urged youth to participate in patriotic activities such as the Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang program to foster social unity and critical thinking.

“This is our country, and we all have the same duty to make Malaysia a nation that gives its people a chance at building better lives, and if youths are not able to work together as one, it would be difficult to achieve this dream,” he said.

Ewon stated that cooperation across racial, ethnic, and religious lines remains essential for Malaysia's ongoing social and economic development.
