GEORGE TOWN: A jobless man with previous convictions for crime and drug offences was charged in the Sessions Court here with robbing and injuring an Indian national.
Mohd Salim Kapoor Rahim, 40, pleaded not guilty to the charge before Sessions Court Judge Irwan Suainbon on Wednesday (Aug 12).
According to the charge, Mohd Salim allegedly robbed the victim of his belongings and intentionally caused hurt to him in front of a house at Block A-2-5, Taman Nusantara, Jalan Makloom here at about 4.20pm on Aug 8.
He was charged under Section 394 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and a fine or whipping upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Anuarul Hakim Abdul Muen offered bail at RM10,000 with additional conditions that the accused report to a police station, refrain from contacting the victim and prosecution witnesses and surrender his passport to the court.
Mohd Salim, who was unrepresented, appealed for a lower bail amount, saying he was unemployed and that his wife would post bail.
The court allowed him bail at RM7,000 with the additional conditions sought by the prosecution.
The case will be mentioned on Sept 15 for document submission and the appointment of a lawyer.
It is learnt that the accused went to the homestay where the victim was staying, impersonated a policeman and demanded that the victim produce his passport.
He then allegedly assaulted the victim with a padlock before snatching his mobile phone and fleeing.
The victim reportedly suffered injuries to his nose and back.
