A FAMILY in India is looking to sue the British government over a 109-year-old loan dating back to the colonial period, Malaysia Nanban reported.

Vivek Ruthia, who hails from Madya Pradesh, said it had always been part of his family lore that the British rulers at Sihor Samrat had taken a large loan from his grandfather, Syed Jummalal, more than a century ago.

However, the family did not have any documentary evidence of this until Vivek went through his grandfather’s old things.

He was shocked to find a debt note which showed that British officials had borrowed 35,000 rupees from his grandfather in June 1917. This amounts to about 120 million rupees (RM5.1mil) in the present day with interest.

Vivek says the current British government has an obligation to pay back the loan with interest.
