Savings from all-in-one polls can be channelled to aid and social protection, says S'wak MP

PETALING JAYA: The proposal to hold concurrent national and state elections deserves serious and constructive consideration, says a Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) MP.

Batang Sadong MP Rodiyah Sapiee said that from a governance standpoint, electoral synchronisation offers clear advantages in terms of fiscal prudence, administrative efficiency, democratic participation and political stability.

"Holding separate elections within a short period would involve substantial administrative, logistical and security expenditures," she said when contacted on Monday (March 2)

A front-page report in The Star on Monday highlighted that with Malaysia facing staggered state polls this year and a looming general election next year, federal lawmakers across party lines are calling for simultaneous elections to curb non-stop politicking and ensure national stability.

Rodiyah said that in the current economic climate, where the government prioritises cost-of-living concerns, potential savings from a coordinated election could be redirected to rakyat-focused initiatives such as targeted assistance, social protection programmes and productivity-driven economy measures.

"A synchronised election would also reduce disruptions to business and daily economic activities, as voters would discharge their civic responsibility once within the electoral cycle.

"This approach may help minimise election fatigue, encourage stronger voter turnout, and allow political parties to focus on substantive policy engagement rather than repeated campaign cycles," she said.

Malaysia's present political stability provides a strong foundation for sustained governance and long-term policy implementation, she added.

"Greater alignment of electoral timelines would support continuity under the 13th Malaysia Plan and the Madani Economic Framework, particularly as the nation advances reforms in fiscal consolidation, investment attraction and energy transition," she said.

Rodiyah pointed out that a predictable electoral calendar would also enhance investor and market confidence by signalling institutional maturity and policy consistency.

"While constitutional processes must be fully respected, electoral synchronisation presents a forward-looking option that will efficiency, stability and the continued prosperity of our nation," she said.
