Cops: Hunter in Kota Belud died from gunshot wounds, not a fall

KOTA KINABALU: A man who was earlier reported to have died after falling from a tree while hunting in Kota Belud was actually shot, police said.

Kota Belud OCPD Supt Shahrudin Husain said that before the incident on Saturday (Feb 28) night, the 44-year-old victim had gone hunting with a friend in a forest reserve at the Safoda Station in Ulu Kukut.

"When we were alerted, our personnel rushed to the scene and found gunshot wounds on the victim," he said in a statement late Sunday (March 1).

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, he said, and the body was taken to Hospital Kota Belud for a post-mortem.

Following the incident, police brought in a 35-year-old man to assist in a murder investigation. A homemade shotgun or *bakakuk*, was seized for forensic and ballistic analysis, Supt Shahrudin added.

He urged the public not to make speculations that could affect the investigation.

Earlier, firemen reported that a man died after falling from a tree in a mishap during a hunting trip.
